was signed, letters were exchanged between our Minister and the Teungli-Imen to the effect that the British Gov-
eriment would do all it could to safeguard the Chinese
revenue in the new territory; and in connection with
that promise Sir Robert Hart has put forward the follow-
ing demands:·

(1) That the Commissioner of Customs now known a
che (Chinese) Kowloonɛ Commissioner shull be fully re-
cognised in Hongkong and by the Hongkong Uovernment as
an Imperial Chiness offloor, raad his office in Hongkong
shall also be recognised and soknowledged.
(2) That the Imperial Marliign Customs shall be
full, authorised and empowered to collect, in Hongkong, all duties, lekin included, on opium and on all goods
and merchandise carried from or to any Chinese porte
in Chinese junks or ve essls.
(3) That the better to enable them to do this, they
shall have set apart for them in the harbour two or more
wharves or jetties, close to the junk anchorages.
(4) That their cruisers and launches shall be per-
mitted to exercise the same rights in the waters of Mira
Bay, Deep Bay and all the meters newly assigned to us as
they have done to date 1.-., complete aqcess to all por-
tions at all timea with full rights of seizure and search
in respect of all vesselo, as if the watere wero wholly
Chinese.
(5) The right to retain all their existing stations Capsul-moon, Lai-Chi-Kok, (in our very harbour)
